Following their 2024 reunion, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum have announced a U.S. tour alongside plans to reissue their first three albums as a North American vinyl box set through Avant Night and Joyful Noise Recordings. The releases, Grand Opening and Closing (2001), Of Natural History (2004), and In Glorious Times (2007), revisit a body of work that has largely remained tied to its original CD-era circulation, with only limited European vinyl availability until now.
Emerging from the Bay Area, the group developed a body of work often framed as a “Rock Against Rock” aesthetic, combining theatrical staging, elaborate costuming, and a dense visual identity with compositions that juxtapose fragility and abrasion. Their performances have historically unfolded as highly stylized environments, populated by invented instruments and mechanical contraptions that extend beyond conventional rock setups.
The current lineup reunites core members including Nils Frykdahl, Carla Kihlstedt, Dan Rathbun, and Michael Mellender, joined by drummer Wes Anderson, whose prior collaborations with the group trace back to earlier projects in the 1990s. The tour is positioned as part of the band’s 25th anniversary activities, with the reissues offering a renewed physical format for material that has remained central to their catalog since their hiatus began in 2011.
